Grade Boundary Calculator

Paste a cohort, shape a distribution, adjust the boundaries and export the results.

1 · Paste students and scores

0 studentsNo names detected
If supplied, percentages are shown and Automatic mode can judge attainment. If omitted, the calculator falls back to the observed score range.
Paste two Excel columns (name + score), one score per line, or a plain list of scores. Header rows and unusable rows are ignored.

2 · Choose a grading scheme

Including grade 0

Without grade 0

3 · Choose how the distribution is shaped

Choose the grade you want to be most common.
An expected cohort median grade is optional. If supplied, it anchors the peak. Otherwise, a supplied maximum mark lets the median percentage choose the peak. If neither is supplied, the middle available grade is used as a clearly labelled fallback.
Use an illustrative built-in distribution, adjust it, or save your own subject/assessment profile in this browser.
Important: generated boundaries are cohort-relative suggestions. They are not official exam-board boundaries. Once generated, every minimum mark can be adjusted manually and the student grades update immediately.

About Grade Boundary Calculator

This grade boundary calculator helps teachers turn student marks into an editable set of assessment grades. Paste two columns from Excel containing names and scores, enter one score per line, or use a plain list of marks. An optional maximum mark enables percentages alongside raw scores. Choose a foundation, higher or full-range grading scheme, with or without grade 0.

Generate suggested boundaries using a chosen peak grade, an automatic estimate from cohort attainment, or a comparative profile. The calculator uses the selected proportions and percentiles of the supplied marks to suggest minimum scores. Automatic mode uses an expected median grade when supplied; otherwise it uses the median percentage if a maximum mark is available, or the middle available grade as a fallback.

After generating results, edit minimum marks to apply your own teacher assessment judgement. Student grades and the cohort distribution update as boundaries change. Copy boundaries or student results into a spreadsheet, or download a CSV. Custom distribution profiles can be saved in this browser for later assessments. Review input warnings and grade ranges before using the output.

Are these official GCSE grade boundaries?

No. The built-in GCSE-style profiles are illustrative, and generated boundaries are cohort-relative suggestions. They are not official exam-board boundaries. Use the published boundaries for the relevant examination when official grades are required.

Does this upload student data?

Names, marks and grade calculations are processed in your browser. This calculator does not upload them to a server. Downloaded CSV files and copied results can contain student information, so store and share those outputs appropriately.
